Take a moment. Close your eyes. Think of the best date you’ve ever been on. What words come to mind? Was it fun? Relaxing? Adventurous?

What do you think makes a great date? While there is no scientific formula, every great date has a few important ingredients that can help make it interesting, memorable and worthy of another. Here is our recipe for a great date, whether it’s your first date or you’ve been going strong for a while.

INGREDIENTS

1 Part Activity

Choosing what to do or where to go on a date can be difficult. If it’s a first date, this can be especially challenging. Planning to go for a meal at a good restaurant is always nice especially if you’re interested in more focused conversation. However, if you are looking for something a little more engaging, or to break the ice, look for an activity that suits the two of you.

If you and your date want to make your outing an educational experience, head to the local science center or museum. If the two of you are more adventurous, try horseback riding or rock climbing.

Activity-based dates allow you to get to know your partner in a different way, too. This can start a new relationship in a memorable way or infuse an established relationship with some excitement. And if it’s the right activity, you may have the chance to show off a little!

1 Part Conversation

Conversation on first dates can be pretty awkward – You walk the line between impressing your date and learning about them. The good news is it generally gets easier as your relationship progresses. As you get to know each other, the range of topics you can discuss expands infinitely. Be open to different topics and ideas. You never know when a conversation will lead to a new opportunity or a great relationship.

And as a tip, read one or two articles related to a topic of interest (or even just random ones from a magazine) before heading out. If there’s a lull in conversation, having fresh information in your head can be very handy to open up a topic you like, or simply to get the ball rolling again. Good conversation is an art, so don’t feel weird planning a little.

A Dash of Spontaneity

Sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. The restaurant loses the reservation or perhaps you forgot to make a reservation. Remember that it’s not the end of the world. If any issues pop up, it’s simply an opportunity to show off how easy going you are and that you are able to go with the flow/think on your feet.

10 Parts Good Attitude

Relationships enrich our lives, whether we’ve been married for 50 years or we’ve known each other for 50 minutes. Embracing the activity, conversation, and overall experience are what will help build a great date and maybe lead to embracing your date at the end of the night!

INSTRUCTIONS

With quality ingredients, putting together a great date is simple. Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way.

1. Schedule the date.

When you ask someone out, it’s good to propose an activity or two and date. For example, you could suggest dinner at LaBrezza’s before heading to the Science Centre or to go for a walk at McHugh Bluff and enjoy the gorgeous city view.

2. Make the necessary preparations.

If you’re planning a dinner, always make a reservation. While some places may not take them, still call to find out when a good time to arrive would be for a better chance at a seat.

3. Add in a surprise.

For a first date with someone you don’t know well this isn’t recommended, but when you have a sense of who the person is, a small surprise can really excite and make someone feel like you listen to and understand them. Avoid anything too sexy or suggestive as it may get taken as you just being interested in them physically and they may not respond well.

4. Go on the date!

Get yourself cleaned up, read a few articles, and go have some fun!
